Actions
Steps a workflow can run in UmmahAPI.
- Get a verseGet one verse of the Qur'an by chapter and verse number, in Arabic and in the translation you pick, with a transliteration and a recitation from each of the thirteen reciters. The step behind quoting a verse in a message, a newsletter or a card. No API key required.
- Get a random verseGet one verse drawn at random from all 6,236, in Arabic and in the translation you pick. Put it on a schedule for a verse a day with no list to keep. Note this is a fresh draw every time rather than a verse of the day: two runs a minute apart get two different verses. No API key required.
- Get a chapterGet a whole chapter of the Qur'an, verse by verse, in Arabic and in the translation you pick, with the recitation links for the chapter. Ask for a few verses at a time to read a long one over several days - Al-Baqara is 286 verses. No API key required.
- Get a juzGet one of the 30 juz, the parts the Qur'an is divided into so it can be read through in a month. Put it on a schedule with the day of the month as the number and the whole month reads itself. A juz runs to 564 verses, so ask for a few at a time unless you want all of it. No API key required.
- Search the Qur'anFind every verse matching a word or phrase. The search looks at the Arabic, the transliteration and one translation at once, so a verse can match on the original even when the English does not contain the word. Finding nothing comes back as an empty result rather than an error, so a workflow can branch on it. No API key required.
- List the chaptersList the Qur'an's 114 chapters in order, each with its name, what the name means, how many verses it holds, where it was revealed and where it falls in the order of revelation. The index to build a table of contents from or to loop a workflow over. No API key required.
- Get word-by-word meaningsGet every word of a verse, or of a whole chapter, with its Arabic, its transliteration and what it means on its own. The step behind a word-by-word reader, a vocabulary drill or a study card. No API key required.
- Get a mushaf pageGet one page of the 604-page Madina mushaf, word by word, with the line each word sits on and the verse it belongs to. What a Qur'an reader app lays a page out from. A page a day is the reading plan that finishes in under two years. No API key required.
- Get a recitationGet the audio for a chapter or a single verse. Name a reciter and you get that reciter's recording of the chapter plus a file for every verse in it; leave it empty and you get all thirteen reciters' recordings to choose between. This is the only step where the reciter is honoured. Note that two of the thirteen recorded whole surahs only, so asking for a single verse returns them with no audio link. No API key required.
- Get similar versesFind the verses that closely resemble another - the mutashabihat, the ones huffaz mix up. Give a chapter and a verse for that verse's matches, a chapter alone to list every verse in it that has any, or leave both empty to draw one at random, which is the step a daily revision quiz is built on. Most verses have none: 1,211 of the 6,236 are in this dataset. No API key required.
- Get tafsirGet scholarly commentary on a verse, or on a whole chapter, from Ibn Kathir, Ma'arif al-Qur'an, al-Muyassar, or all four at once. Two are in English and two in Arabic. Note the classical works comment on a run of verses at a time rather than one by one, so a chapter of four verses can come back as a single comment covering all four. No API key required.
- Get a hadithGet one hadith by its number within a collection, in Arabic and English with its grading. Note the numbering is each collection's own and does not always start at 1 - Sahih Muslim's first hadith is not number 1 - so browse a collection if you need to know where it begins. No API key required.
- Get a random hadithGet one hadith drawn at random from all 36,108, or from a single collection. A hadith a day on a schedule, with no list to keep. Check the grade before posting one: the four Sunan carry hadiths of mixed reliability. No API key required.
- Search hadithsFind hadiths whose text matches a word or phrase, across all ten collections or within one. Finding nothing comes back as an empty result rather than an error. No API key required.
- Browse a collectionRead a collection a page at a time, in its own order. The step to work through Bukhari over a year, or to find out where a collection's numbering begins. No API key required.
- List hadith collectionsList the ten collections with their authors, how many hadiths each holds and how the collection as a whole is regarded - Bukhari and Muslim are Sahih throughout, the four Sunan are mixed. The step to pick a collection from, or to check one before quoting from it. No API key required.
- Get prayer timesGet the five prayer times for a place and a day, with which prayer is on now, which is next and how long until it. Imsak and sunrise come back beside them, so a suhoor reminder has what it needs. Every time is given both as a clock time and as a full timestamp with its UTC offset, which is what you want for scheduling. No API key required.
- Get a prayer timetableGet a whole month of prayer times, or a whole Ramadan with suhoor and iftar named for each of the thirty days. The step to cache a timetable, print one, or post a fasting schedule before the month starts. Fill in the Ramadan year to get the Ramadan timetable instead of a calendar month. No API key required.
- List calculation methodsList every prayer-time calculation method with the angles it uses for Fajr and Isha, what it is used for and which short names it answers to. The step to find the method your mosque follows, or to see why two timetables disagree. No API key required.
- Get the qibla directionGet the compass bearing from any place to the Kaaba, with the distance in kilometres and miles. The bearing is from true north rather than magnetic north, so anything pointing a physical needle has to correct for declination first. No API key required.
- Convert a dateConvert a date between the Gregorian and Islamic calendars, either way. Fill in the Gregorian date to go one way, or the Hijri year, month and day to go the other. Both calendars come back either way, so a later step never has to know which direction you asked for. No API key required.
- Get today's Islamic dateGet today's Hijri date with the moon beside it: the phase, how lit it is, whether the crescent is visible, and when the next new moon falls. One step rather than two, because the two questions are always asked together - what the date is, and whether the crescent that starts the next month has been seen. Flags Ramadan and the sacred months. No API key required.
- List the coming new moonsList the coming new moons with the date each crescent should first be visible and which Hijri month it starts. The conjunction and the sighting are not the same event - the new moon is an instant, and the crescent appears a day or so later, which is when the month actually begins. The step to plan around Ramadan or Dhu al-Hijjah months ahead. No API key required.
- List Islamic eventsList the Islamic year's observances - the two Eids, Ramadan, Ashura, Laylat al-Qadr and the rest - each with the Hijri month and day it falls on, plus which one is next. The step behind a reminder that fires before an Eid. No API key required.
- Get a du'aGet one supplication by its number, or one at random, in Arabic with a transliteration, what it means, where it is narrated from and how many times it is said. A du'a a day on a schedule. No API key required.
- Find duasSearch the 126 duas by what they are for, list one category - morning, evening, travel, distress - or list all of them. The step behind a morning adhkar post or a du'a for the occasion. No API key required.
- List du'a categoriesList the 27 categories the duas are filed under, with how many each holds. The step to pick a category from before listing its duas. No API key required.
- Get the 99 names of AllahGet the Asma ul Husna: all 99, one by number, a search by meaning, or the handful set aside for a given day of the week. Each comes with the Arabic, a transliteration and what it means. Fill in only one of the three fields. No API key required.
- Find Islamic namesLook through 210 Islamic given names: search by meaning, filter by gender or origin, or fetch one by its number. Each comes with its Arabic, what it means, where it comes from and the root consonants it is built from - names sharing a root share a meaning. No API key required.
- Get the nisab thresholdsGet the gold and silver nisab thresholds and the live metal prices behind them, in any currency. Nisab is the wealth a person must hold before zakat is due at all, and the two standards give very different answers - silver has been much the cheaper for a century, so the silver threshold catches far more people. Check is_fallback before acting on a figure. No API key required.
- Calculate zakatWork out the zakat due on savings, gold, silver, shares, business stock and other investments, less what is owed. Gold and silver are priced from the live market, so only the weight is needed. Nothing is due below the nisab threshold, and the result shows its working: what was counted, what was deducted, which threshold it was measured against and at what prices. Zakat is due on wealth held for a lunar year, which nothing here can check. No API key required.
- Calculate zakat on a harvestWork out ushr, the zakat on agricultural produce: a tenth of a rain-fed crop, a twentieth of an irrigated one, because irrigation cost the grower something. Unlike zakat on wealth there is no threshold to clear and no year to wait - it falls due at harvest. No API key required.
