Steps a workflow can run in Sefaria.

  • Get a passageGet the text of any passage in the library (a verse, a chapter, a page of Talmud, a paragraph of Mishneh Torah) in the language it was written in and in translation, lined up verse by verse. Pick which translation to read it against, or leave that empty for the one Sefaria leads with; either way the original comes too. Every edition comes back with its licence and its publisher, so it can be quoted properly.
  • Search the libraryFind every passage in the library that says something. Searches the Hebrew and the translations together and matches a word in any of its forms, so 'love' finds 'loved'. Narrow it to parts of the library, or ask for an exact phrase. One passage held in several translations is returned once, best match first.
  • Get commentary on a passageRead what the commentators say about one passage (Rashi, Ramban, Sforno and the rest), with each commentator's remarks kept together and in order. Widen it beyond commentary to the midrash, the Talmud, the halakhic and chasidic works that quote or discuss the same line. Genesis 1:1 alone has over five hundred, so ask for as many as you want to read.
  • Get the day's learningWhat every daily and weekly study cycle is reading on a given day: Daf Yomi, the weekly Torah portion and its haftarah, the daily Mishnah, the daily Rambam, Tanya Yomi, Yerushalmi Yomi and the rest. Each one comes back as a reference you can hand straight to 'Get a passage'. Leave the date empty for today.
  • Look up a Torah portionEverything about one of the fifty-four weekly Torah portions: the verses it covers, the seven aliyot it is read in, its haftarah, a short account of what happens in it, and the next date it is read, in both the ordinary and the Hebrew calendar.
  • Find sources on a topicThe sources Sefaria's editors have gathered on a theme (forgiveness, hospitality, Shabbat, justice), in the order they consider most telling, each with a line on why it belongs. Pick a topic from the list, or type any other; the answer says which topic it found.
  • Look up a Hebrew or Aramaic wordWhat a Hebrew or Aramaic word means, from the dictionaries in Sefaria's library (Klein, Jastrow and BDB), with every sense each one gives. Vowels are optional. Name a passage as well and the lookup is narrowed to the word as it is used there.
  • Look up a bookWhat a book in the library is: what it covers, when and where it was written, where it sits in the library, what it is called in Hebrew and what else it is cited as. It also returns the shape of the book (how many chapters, and how many verses in each), which is what a workflow needs to walk through it a chapter at a time.
  • Get a random passageA passage drawn at random from the library, for a daily verse or a study prompt. Keep it to the parts of the library you want to hear from, or leave that empty for anything at all. It comes back in the same shape as 'Get a passage'.
