Steps a workflow can run in swisstopo.

  • Search Swiss places and addressesFind a Swiss address, postcode, municipality, district, canton, land parcel or any name on the national map (a peak, a lake, a station) and get where it is, as latitude and longitude and on the Swiss LV95 grid. Addresses come with their building's EGID and parcels with their EGRID, and municipalities, cantons and addresses with an id 'Get a map feature' can read. The most likely match is also returned on its own, for the next step to use.
  • Look up what's at a locationFind out which municipality (with its official number), canton, district, postcode and land parcel (with its EGRID) a point in Switzerland lies in, and the nearest official address with its building's EGID and name. Give an address or place name, or latitude and longitude, such as a phone's location. Useful to file a report under the right municipality or to turn a point into an address.
  • Find map features at a locationList what the chosen map layers hold at a point: the building register's entry, the protected area, the noise level, the mobile coverage, the school district or any of hundreds of other federal and cantonal layers. Give an address or place name, or latitude and longitude, and a radius to include what is nearby. Each feature comes with every field the layer holds and an id 'Get a map feature' can read.
  • Find map features by attributeFind the features of one map layer whose field holds a value: a municipality by name, a building by its EGID, a street by its name, a protected site by its number. Matches part of the value unless an exact match is asked for. Each feature comes with every field the layer holds and an id 'Get a map feature' can read for where it is.
  • Get a map featureRead one feature of a map layer by its id: every field the layer holds for it, and where it is, as latitude and longitude and on the LV95 grid, with the rectangle it fits in. Ids come from the other steps: a municipality's official number, a building's EGID with its entrance (2242547_0) and so on.
  • Search map layersFind map layers in geo.admin.ch's catalogue by keyword, such as 'noise', 'building register' or 'protected areas', and get each one's id for the other steps.
  • Get a map layer's detailsRead what a map layer holds: its description, the office the data comes from (to name as the source), when it was last updated, where to download it, and every field its features have with example values, for searching it with 'Find map features by attribute'.
  • Get the height of a locationGet the ground's height above sea level at an address, a place or a point, from swisstopo's elevation models, to a tenth of a metre. Covers Switzerland and the land just around it.
  • Get an elevation profileMeasure the ground along a line through two or more places or points, such as a hike or a planned pipe: its length, the total climb and drop, the lowest and highest point, and the height at evenly spaced points along it. The line runs straight between the points given, so give a route's points to follow a route.
  • Convert latitude and longitude to Swiss coordinatesTurn a latitude and longitude (as GPS and most maps give them) into an easting and northing on the Swiss LV95 grid, the system Swiss land registers, plans and cantonal maps use. Exact to a few centimetres, from swisstopo's official conversion service.
  • Convert Swiss coordinates to latitude and longitudeTurn an easting and northing on a Swiss grid, from a land register, a plan or a cantonal dataset, into latitude and longitude for any map. Reads the current LV95 grid and the older LV03 one, telling them apart by their size, and gives LV95 for both. Exact to a few centimetres, from swisstopo's official conversion service.
