NIH RePORTER

Research & AcademiaMisc References

Search the public record of what the NIH pays for: every grant, contract and intramural project since the 1980s, with the money, the researchers, the institutions and the papers that came out of it. Find the projects working on a topic, read one in full including its abstract, see who the best-funded researchers in a field are, total up the spending by year, institute, university or state, or start from a paper and find the grants behind it. Awards from the VA, FDA, AHRQ and parts of the CDC are covered too. No account or API key is required.

Steps your workflow can run in NIH RePORTER.

Find funded projectsSearch every grant, contract and intramural project NIH has funded since the 1980s, by topic, fiscal year, institute, organization, researcher, state, award size and more. Each result carries the title, the money, the people, the institution and a link to the project on RePORTER. Add at least one filter.
Get project detailsEverything RePORTER holds about one project: the full abstract and the plain-language relevance statement, the investigators and program officers, the review panel, the cost breakdown, and every fiscal year it has been funded for with what each year was worth. Takes a project number in either form, or an application ID.
Find researchersWho is behind the funding: the same search as Find funded projects, but one row per person instead of one per award, ranked by how much NIH money they hold. Use it to find the leading names in a field, spot who to collaborate with, or see which investigators an institution's funding rests on. Components of center grants are left out, so nobody's total counts the same dollars twice.
Summarize fundingHow much money a search adds up to, and how it breaks down by fiscal year, institute, organization and state: the numbers RePORTER's own API cannot total for you. Answers questions like what NIH spent on long COVID last year, or which universities lead a field. Components of center grants are left out, because their money is already inside the parent award.
List a project's publicationsThe papers a grant has produced, as PubMed IDs and links. RePORTER credits papers to the grant as a whole, so a project number for any single year returns the lot. Feed the PubMed IDs into the PubMed integration for titles, authors and abstracts.
Find the grants behind a paperStart from a paper and find the NIH grants that paid for it, with the money, the investigators and the institutions behind them. A paper often names several. Takes a PubMed ID or a PubMed link.
