Do the maths a workflow cannot. Work out any calculation and get a real number back rather than text, with values from earlier steps passed in by name so an empty one is reported instead of quietly breaking the sum. Convert between the hundred or so units people actually use - kilograms to pounds, Celsius to Fahrenheit, gigabytes to mebibytes - by picking both from a list, with a conversion between two different kinds of thing refused before it is sent. Summarise a column of figures in one step, apply a single formula to a whole list of values in one request, show a number in all four bases at once, and simplify or differentiate a formula. Math.js is the calculation engine behind mathjs.org, open source under the Apache 2.0 licence, and its web service is free and needs no account or API key.

Steps your workflow can run in Math.js.

Evaluate a calculationWork out a calculation and get the answer back as a real number, not text. Write one step per line, exactly as you would on paper: a value you name on one line is there on the next, and the last line is the answer. Handles the things a workflow usually cannot - units (5.08 cm in inch), percentages, trigonometry, matrices, fractions and very large or very precise numbers. Values from earlier steps go in the named values field rather than into the text, so an empty one is reported rather than quietly breaking the sum.
Apply a formula to a list of valuesRun one formula over a whole list of numbers and get a list of answers back, in the same order. This is the step for a column of figures: add VAT to every price, convert every reading, round every total. Write the formula once using x for each value. It is worked out in a single request however long the list, so it costs the same as one calculation.
Convert unitsConvert an amount from one unit into another - kilograms to pounds, Celsius to Fahrenheit, gigabytes to mebibytes, kilometres per hour to miles per hour. Pick both units from the list; there is no syntax to get right, and two units that measure different things are refused before the request rather than coming back as an error. Temperatures are converted properly, offset and all, so 20 Celsius is 68 Fahrenheit rather than 36.
Get statistics for a list of numbersSummarise a column of numbers in one step: how many there are, their total, smallest, largest and range, the mean, median and most common value, the standard deviation and variance, and the quartiles. Everything is worked out in a single request. Both the sample and the population standard deviation come back, because which one is meant is the quietest way a figure like this goes wrong.
Convert a number between basesTake a whole number and get it in all four bases at once - decimal, binary, octal and hexadecimal - each with and without its 0b/0o/0x prefix, so it drops straight into code or into a message. A number pasted in with a prefix is read as that base whatever the field says, so 0xFF works without changing anything.
Simplify a formulaReduce a formula to its simplest equivalent form without working out a number: 2x + 3x becomes 5 * x, and x * 0 + 1 becomes 1. Use it to tidy a formula somebody has typed before showing it back to them, or to collapse one a workflow has built up piece by piece. It says whether anything actually changed.
Differentiate a formulaWork out the derivative of a formula with respect to one of its variables - the rate at which it changes. x^2 + 2x differentiated by x is 2 * (x + 1). The answer is simplified on the way out, and any other letters in the formula are held constant.
