OMDb

Film, TV & Fandom

Look up films, series and episodes on the Open Movie Database: plot, cast, genres, runtime, awards, posters and IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores.

Search by title, read one title back by its IMDb ID, walk a series down to a season and an episode, or pull just the part you need - the ratings, the plot, the poster or the credits. OMDb answers in strings, using "N/A" for anything it does not hold; every action here turns that into real numbers, real lists and real dates, so a rating can be compared, a runtime added up and a release date put straight into a date field without any tidying first.

A free API key from https://www.omdbapi.com/apikey.aspx allows 1,000 requests a day and covers every action.

Steps your workflow can run in OMDb.

Get title by IMDb IDLook up one film, series or episode by its IMDb ID and get its full record: plot, cast and crew, genres, runtime, age rating, awards, box office, poster and every rating attached to it. An IMDb ID is exact, so this is the dependable way to read a title an earlier step found. A full imdb.com/title/ URL works as well as the bare ID.
Get title by nameLook up one title by name and get its full record. Narrow it with a type or a year when the name is shared - OMDb answers with a single best match rather than a list, so 'Dune' in 1984 and 'Dune' in 2021 are told apart by the year.
Get filmLook up one film by title and get its full record, including box office takings as a number and its Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores. Series of the same name are ignored, so a film search cannot come back with a TV show.
Get seriesLook up one TV series by title and get its full record, including how many seasons it ran for and whether it is still running - OMDb writes an unfinished run as an open-ended year range, which is read out here as a plain true/false. Films of the same name are ignored.
Get episodeLook up one episode of a series by season and episode number and get its full record: its own plot, director, guest cast, air date and IMDb rating. Name the series either by title or by its IMDb ID.
List season episodesList every episode in one season of a series, each with its number, title, air date and IMDb rating, plus its own IMDb ID so any of them can be read in full afterwards. Use it to find a season's best-rated episode, or to build a series digest. Name the series either by title or by its IMDb ID.
Search titlesSearch for films, series and episodes by name and get a page of matches, ten at a time, each carrying an IMDb ID a later step can look up. A search that matches nothing returns no rows rather than failing, so a workflow can look for something that may not exist.
Search filmsSearch for films by title and get a page of matches, with series and episodes left out. Each row carries an IMDb ID, the year, and a poster link. Add a year to separate a remake from the original.
Search seriesSearch for TV series by title and get a page of matches, with films and episodes left out. Each row carries an IMDb ID, which is what the season and episode actions take.
Search episodesSearch for individual episodes by title and get a page of matches, with films and series left out. Useful when you know an episode's name but not which season it was in.
Get ratingsRead every score a title carries - IMDb's average and vote count, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic - with each one converted to a percentage so they can actually be compared, plus the average across them. OMDb reports these on three different scales ('8.8/10', '87%', '74/100'), which is why the raw values cannot be averaged as they stand.
Get plotRead a title's plot summary, either the one-line version or the full synopsis, with its genres, age rating and runtime alongside. Use it to summarise, categorise or draft copy about a title without pulling its whole record.
Get poster URLRead the poster image URL for a title, ready to attach to an email, a message or a card. It comes back with a plain flag saying whether OMDb had any artwork at all, so a step can skip the image instead of sending a broken link.
Get cast and crewRead who directed, wrote and starred in a title, each as a proper list rather than the one comma-joined string OMDb sends, so a workflow can loop over the names or filter on them. OMDb credits the headline names, not the full cast.
