DatabasesSpreadsheets

Read and write the records in your Grist documents from a workflow. Grist is a spreadsheet that works like a database, and this connects to all of it: pick a document and a table from a dropdown, then find records, add them, update them, or add-or-update in one step so a customer is never duplicated. Dates and choice lists are handled for you: type 2026-03-01 into a date column and 2026-03-01 is what comes back, rather than the number of seconds Grist stores underneath. Build the structure too: create a document, create a table, and add a column of whatever type you need. For the questions records cannot answer (totals, date ranges, joins across tables), run a read-only SQL query. Export any table as CSV to attach to an email. One API key connects everything your Grist account can see, personal documents and team sites alike, and a self-hosted Grist works the same way.

Actions

Steps your workflow can run in Grist.

List documentsList every Grist document the connection can open, across your personal area and any team sites, with the workspace each one sits in and a link that opens it.
List workspacesList the workspaces documents are kept in, across your personal area and any team sites, with how many documents each already holds and whether your account can add to it. This is where 'Create a document' gets the workspace to put a new document in.
Get a documentGet a document's name, the workspace and team site holding it, when it last changed, and a link that opens it.
List tablesList the tables in a document. Each one comes back with the name you see in Grist and the ID the other actions take, which are not always spelled the same. The summary tables Grist derives for charts and totals are left out.
List columnsList a table's columns: what each is called, what it holds (text, a number, a date, a choice), the values a choice column allows, the table a link column points at, and which columns are formulas that Grist fills in itself.
Find recordsGet records from a table, matching one column against one or more values, or leave the column blank to get everything. Sort by any column and cap how many come back. Values are matched against what the cell really holds, so a date typed as 2026-03-01 and a number typed as 12 find the records they should instead of quietly finding none.
Get a recordGet one record by its ID, the number 'Find records' returns and adding a record hands back.
Add a recordAdd a record to a table, filling in each column from a list of that table's own columns rather than a blank box. The record comes back as Grist stored it, with its new ID, so the next step can use it straight away.
Update a recordChange some columns of one record. Columns you leave blank keep the values they already have.
Add or update a recordFind the record whose column holds a given value (an email address, an order number) and update it, or add it when there is no such record. The result says which happened, so a workflow can welcome a new customer and leave an existing one alone.
Delete a recordPermanently remove one record from a table.
Create a tableAdd a table to a document, naming the columns it starts with. Each column takes its type from the first value put in it, the same way a table made by hand in Grist does.
Add a columnAdd one column of a particular type: text, a number, a toggle, a date, a date and time, a choice or several choices from a list you give, a link to records in another table, or attachments.
Create a documentCreate an empty document in one of your workspaces, ready for a table and records.
Run a SQL queryRun a read-only SELECT across a document's tables for the questions records cannot answer: totals, date ranges, and joins. Values go in separately from the query text, so an apostrophe in a customer's name cannot break it. Nothing in the document can be changed by it.
Export a table as CSVGet a whole table as CSV text, formatted the way Grist shows it, ready to attach to an email or save as a file.
