Triggers

Start a workflow when something happens in GeoNet.

  • GeoNet New EarthquakeTriggers when GeoNet publishes a new quake at or above the shaking and magnitude you choose, once per quake
  • GeoNet Volcanic Alert Level ChangedTriggers when a New Zealand volcano's Volcanic Alert Level goes up or down, with the level before and after

Actions

Steps a workflow can run in GeoNet.

  • List recent quakesList the quakes of the last year that may have been felt in New Zealand, newest first, down to a shaking intensity you choose and optionally a magnitude. Each comes with its time in UTC and New Zealand time, magnitude, depth, locality, the shaking it may have caused, and its GeoNet ID for the other quake steps. GeoNet returns at most 100 quakes for each intensity.
  • Get a quakeGet one quake by its GeoNet ID: when it struck, its magnitude, depth and location, the shaking it may have caused, and how settled GeoNet's solution is. Use it to read a quake again after GeoNet has reviewed it, since magnitudes change in the first hours.
  • Get a quake's location historyList every solution GeoNet published for one quake, newest first, from the first automatic estimate to the reviewed one, with how far the magnitude moved between them. Not every quake has a history; one without comes back with none.
  • Get earthquake statisticsCount the quakes GeoNet located in the last 7, 28 and 365 days, in total and by magnitude band, and day by day for as many recent days as you choose. Use it for a weekly summary or to notice a busy spell.
  • Search earthquakesSearch GeoNet's whole earthquake catalogue, back to the 1800s, by time window, magnitude, depth, and distance from a point. Use it for anything 'List recent quakes' cannot reach: last month's quakes near Wellington, every magnitude 6 since 2010, the deep ones under Taupō. A search may match up to 10,000 events, so a long window needs a minimum magnitude.
  • Get felt reportsGet what people reported feeling through GeoNet's felt reports: around one quake, or across the last hour when no quake is given. Returns how many reported, the strongest shaking, a count per intensity, and the areas the reports came from, strongest first.
  • Get shaking measured in the last hourGet the strongest shaking GeoNet's sensors measured across New Zealand in the last hour: how many sensors reported, the strongest intensity, a count per intensity, and the sensors that shook hardest. A quick check of whether anything is shaking right now.
  • Get strong-motion readings for a quakeGet the peak ground acceleration and velocity each strong-motion station recorded for one quake, strongest first, with each station's distance from the epicentre. Engineers use it to see how hard buildings near a site were shaken. Small quakes have no readings, and come back saying so.
  • List volcanic alert levelsList the current Volcanic Alert Level of every volcano GeoNet watches, from 0 (no unrest) to 5 (major eruption), with its aviation colour code, activity and likely hazards, highest level first.
  • Get a volcano's alert levelGet one volcano's current Volcanic Alert Level, aviation colour code, activity and likely hazards, with plain yes or no answers to whether it shows unrest and whether it is erupting.
  • List quakes near a volcanoList the quakes GeoNet located in the region around one volcano over the last 60 days, newest first, with the shaking at the epicentre and whether a person has reviewed each one.
  • List GeoNet newsList GeoNet's latest stories, newest first: volcanic activity bulletins (with the alert level each announces), stories about notable quakes and other geohazard events, news and data blog posts. Narrow to the kinds you want.
  • List monitoring stationsList the GeoNet sites that carry one kind of sensor, such as seismometers, tsunami gauges, GPS stations or volcano cameras, with each site's code, name, position and when it started recording.
  • Get a monitoring stationGet one GeoNet station's details for a kind of sensor: where it is, when it opened, and every instrument installed at each of its sites, with make, model and the data channels recorded.
