How it works

Everything the template sets up, and what to fill in before the first run.

At 7am this reads the last twenty-four hours of news on your topic from two independent services - GNews and News API - and sends you one Telegram message with what they found. Two services are used because they index different publishers, so between them they cover far more than either does alone.

The same story usually turns up in both feeds. Headlines are matched on their text, ignoring case and surrounding spaces, and the second copy of a story is dropped - so a digest of ten headlines is ten different stories, not five printed twice. The first copy seen is the one kept, along with its publisher and its link.

Each service is read separately and a failure in one does not cost you the other: if GNews is down you still get the News API headlines, with a line at the bottom of the digest saying which service was missing. It sends on quiet mornings too, saying so, because a digest that goes silent is indistinguishable from one that has broken. The reason a service failed goes to the run log only - never into the chat, where it could carry the request it failed on.

Set 'translateInto' to a language code, such as 'es' or 'ja', and each headline is translated with Google Translate before it goes out; the link and the publisher's name are left alone. Google Translate returns HTML-escaped text, so the escapes for apostrophes, quotes and ampersands are decoded before sending. A headline that cannot be translated is sent in its original language rather than dropped. Leave 'translateInto' empty for no translation.

Headlines are reported exactly as the services supplied them. Nothing is summarised, rewritten or characterised, and no headline, publisher or link is ever invented - a detail a service did not send is simply left out of that line.

Fill in 'newsTopic' with what to follow and 'digestChatId' with the Telegram chat to send to. 'headlineLanguage' picks the language the articles themselves are written in, 'headlinesPerSource' how many to ask each service for, and 'maxHeadlines' how many make the digest.
