How it works

Everything the template sets up, and what to fill in before the first run.

Every day this workflow reads your expenses spreadsheet and files each row under one of the categories you define - your own chart of accounts, written in plain language.

Results are appended to a separate 'Categorised' tab rather than written back over your rows. The expenses sheet is usually someone's own record or a bank export, and a workflow that edits it in place is one bad run away from destroying the original. Each output row carries the source row number, so anything that looks wrong can be traced straight back.

An expense that fits none of your categories is left out rather than forced into the nearest one, and a row with no description is skipped rather than guessed at. One row that cannot be processed is logged and skipped; the rest of the sheet still gets filed.

The source tab is expected to have Date, Description and Amount columns. To set it up, paste your spreadsheet URL and list your categories.
