How it works

Everything the template sets up, and what to fill in before the first run.

Give it the list of companies you are about to prospect into and it works down the list, researches each one on the web, and writes a short brief into the row - so the research is sitting next to the account the next time anyone opens the list, instead of being re-done in a browser tab before every call.

Each brief is four lines: what the company does, its size and stage, one signal from the last six months, and one opening angle tying that signal to what you sell. That last line is why 'whatWeSell' is worth writing properly - it is the difference between a company summary and something a rep can actually open with.

Your sheet The tab needs two column headers in row 1, and Brief has to be the first column:

Brief | Company

Brief is the only column the workflow writes, and it writes nothing else on the row. That is why it has to be column A: a one-column write lands on A alone, so a brief can be filled in without touching anything else you keep on the row - contact names, phone numbers, owner, notes, whatever is there. Put those columns after Company in any order you like; they are left exactly as they are.

A row is researched when its Brief cell is empty. Once a brief has been written the row is skipped from then on, so nothing is researched twice and nothing you have edited by hand is overwritten. To refresh a company, clear its Brief cell and the next run fills it in again.

Rows are skipped rather than guessed at: a row with no company name is left alone, and if the tab is missing one of the two named columns the run says so in the log and moves on instead of writing into the wrong place. A company the research step cannot answer for is left for the next run.

Settings - spreadsheetUrl: the link to your prospect list. - sheetName: the tab the list is on. Defaults to 'Prospects'. - whatWeSell: a sentence or two on what you sell and who buys it. - maxCompaniesPerRun: how many companies to research each time. It runs every six hours, so 10 works through about 40 companies a day; lower it if you want to spend less.
